Principal's Message . . .
Christine Lester, Principal
What a wonderful semester we have had with staff working extremely hard to ensure all of our students complete their VET and ASDAN programs. We also enjoyed School Camp, the School Ball and many class excursions. We entered STEM Competitions, participated in Sports Carnivals and also farewelled our 2022 Leavers. We also successfully transitioned students into their 2023 classes.
I would like to thank our parent community who continue to support us wholeheartedly with special thanks to our School Council members who dedicated their time to ensure school plans and processes are adhered to. I would also like to acknowledge our collaborative relationship with the Senior Campus staff who suppoprt our students in specific learning areas and to their Admin team who make sharing a school site a harmonious experience.
Every day that I arrive at school, I feel so very grateful to be amongst like minded professionals whose main vocation is to make a difference in the lives of young people - to all staff at Cyril Jackson, I thank you for your camararderie, your ongoing support and your dedication to all students within our school.
Finally, I would like to thank our students who make each day interesting, different and fun. Your energy and enthusiasm are infectious, you are the reason we educate and we are reminded each day of our impact in your lives.
I would like to wish everyone a safe, happy and relaxing break and look forward to welcoming you back into school in 2023.
B1 Classroom . . .
B1 students and staff have enjoyed a busy Term 4. As part of our English Preliminary Units, students enjoyed a visit to the Law Society of Western Australia. Students learnt about the different courts in Western Australia and what each court involves. Students were able to view a real court case and see how the justice system works. We all enjoyed the mock trial where students got to take on different roles, it was a great excursion.
Our end of year classroom excursion was to Morley Bowling. Students rang different recreation venues to gain information - and as a whole class, voted for this activity. Linda took out the top score, her first time playing bowling. We enjoyed our lunch and milkshake.
The Term has gone by very fast, and I would like to thank my students: Linda, Luci, Shanelle, Paige, Omar, Lachy and Noah for making it so memorable.
It takes a team of dedicated staff to gain the best results so a big thanks to the B1 team: Deb, Mike and Lee who have worked hard all year to ensure the students are engaged and achieving their goals.
Tabea Henke, B1 Classroom Teacher
B2 Classroom . . .
The year of 2022 has been nothing short of an action packed experience for our new students to Cyril Jackson SC ESC. All of these young men have demonstrated tremendous growth in their confidence at school and have come so far in creating new relationships and investigating new interests as the year has passed.
This Term, B2 students got to embark on their first school camp whether it was staying the night or joining in on the daily adventures. It was incredible to see the positivity and involvement of all the B2 students as they enjoyed many activities with their peers - from flying foxing to shooting targets with a bow and arrow.
It’s not easy attending a three day camp at your new school, however I couldn’t be more impressed with the courage and motivation of each student as they got amongst all the fun and chaos. Students have also really enjoyed the last Community Access Excursion for the year where we were fortunate enough to play old school games against each other at Nostalgia Box alongside the classes of B4, B5 and B6. As the school year starts to wrap up, all the impressive hard work of each student starts to show as our projects and courses slowly come to an end.
It has been an exhilarating year to say the least and I have been more than lucky to have the privilege of teaching such charismatic and admirable young men.
Andrew Dixon, B2 Classroom Teacher
B3 Classroom . . .
Over the course of Term 4, students have completed their final parts of their education at Cyril Jackson SC ESC. We have been working hard updating our resumes and cover letters with everything the class has accomplished over the last year.
Taking advantage of the warm weather, B3 has been enjoying cricket lessons on Monday afternoons, along with morning walks to settle in to school. Our community access was a visit to Nostalgia Box museum, learning about the history of video games.
We were also lucky enough to have RAC patrol run a workshop for the school to teach our students the basics of car servicing. Many students participated learning about how to maintain a car. As our student’s become more independent, this will be a key skill going forward.
Thank you to all parents, staff and students who have been involved in B3 over the year.
Jack Scott, B3 Classroom Teacher
B4 Classroom . . .
We have had another exciting Term in B4 class, filled with many interesting and enjoyable activities and opportunities to learn. Students have undertaken many activities including Work Place Learning, Certificate Courses, Keys 4 Life, STEM, ASDAN, Rock and Water, Bushranger Cadets, community access excursions, Bike@bility and Bean@bility.
We have had the opportunity to experience Art and Hospitality at the Main Campus, and complete Preliminary units. We successfully participated in dance, music, photography, yoga, and drumbeat which were popular options.
We have concentrated on developing independence, practicing our communication skills, and using these skills, such as money handling, that we learn in our Preliminary units, out in the real world. During our class Shopping Program, all the students demonstrated their communication, cash handling and team work skills, and made some healthy and tasty meals. We also went shopping to chose and purchase a t-shirt as part of the community access program.
Students also practiced social skills in fun activities, such as the School Ball, Interschool Sports Carnivals, School Camp, and various community access activities, including visiting the Electoral Education Centre, and the Law Courts, and were great ambassadors for our school.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday, and look forward to seeing you in 2023.
Steve Ryce, B4 Classroom Teacher
B5 Classroom . . .
And just like that we have finished our year in B5. Term 4 was fast paced, but what a great way to cap off a terrific year.
We started with camp at Woodman Point. B5 students tried their hand at lots of courageous activities that saw them step outside of their comfort zone such as high rope courses, the flying fox and archery. Some of them even made me step out of my comfort zone (I’m looking at you Sam for convincing me to jump backwards on the flying fox)!
We worked very hard to finish off our P – Units and IEP goals this term, and students received certificates & qualifications to reflect their work ethic in a range of different subjects. ASDAN Photography, Automotive Studies, Work Skills and the White Card Qualification are only some of the certificates & qualifications that B5 students received that will aid in their post school endeavours.
Outside of the classroom, students worked very hard (at their work placements) and played even harder at our last Community Access of the year, which was held at the retro game arcade Nostalgia Box. Reading through the Work Placement comments each of my students received during the Term and observing them at Nostalgia Box filled me with such joy, as I know each of you have grown so much over the course of this year.
I must say, Term 4 also feels a bit bittersweet for me. As it is the last time I will see Michael at Cyril Jackson as he is graduating. For this I am beyond proud, but also sad as he contributed to a lot of the fun we had in B5.
B5 graduate - Michael we wish you happiness and success in your future and thank you for being a part of B5 this year!
Mikail Koulianos, B5 Classroom Teacher
B6 Classroom . . .
What a year it has been in B6 Classroom. Students have been working hard finishing off their work as they quickly head towards graduation day on 2 December! This Term has seen students finalise their career portfolios, creating professional resumes and conducting mock interviews to prepare them for their future outside of school.
Students have been working tremendously hard at their work placements this Term and have gained a lot of valuable skills and experience within these placements which will assist them in their future aspirations.
B6 students have participated in and received certificates in a range of qualifications including General Education for Adults, Agrifoods, Hospitality, ASDAN Independent Living and Permaculture to name a few. It has been so pleasing to see the graduating students work so hard to complete so many certificates this Term that will no doubt enhance their post-school opportunities.
It has been such a pleasure seeing B6 students go from strength to strength not only this term, but this year and I wish Chebar, Riley, Raymond, Tahlia, Deeghan, Sam and Simon all the very best as they begin a very exciting new chapter in their lives. Well done and good luck.
Liz Collodel, B6 Classroom Teacher

Certificate I in Permaculture
In Semester 2, a key focus was to harvest produce from students individual garden beds. Students have been working on - pruning shrubs, weeding and making several trips to the skip bin to empty wheelbarrows. Each week , students spent time in the garden area culling weeds and re-applying mulch around the plants in the garden beds to keep the weeds minimal.
Another project was preparing our 'Native Garden' with native soil, planting bush tucker fruiting shrubs followed by mulching the area.
As the course is slowly winding up, students have begun removing plant material from garden beds and disposing into the open compost bays. Students have collected seeds from various flowering plants which are being stored and will be used in the next growing season.
Throughout the course, students collected food scraps from the Café and placed into the compost tumbler to add a ratio of carbon and nitrogen. Once the compost has fully decomposed it will be used in the garden beds. All students have worked well throughout the Permaculture course.
Gina Russo-Forcina, Education Assistant
Certificate II in CGEA . . .
This year, seven hard-working and dedicated students completed and achieved their Certificate II General Education for Adults – something they should be extremely proud of.
This qualification is made up of 11 Units of Competency and teaches students a range of valuable literacy and numeracy skills, as well as career development and workplace health and safety.
This Term, students worked productively and completed their final assessment tasks for the qualification. This saw students attend an end of year lunch to celebrate the success of completing this certificate course.
Although some of the academic aspects of this course were quite challenging for students, it was pleasing to see students demonstrate perseverance and determination when learning new topics and skills.
It is so pleasing to see these students walk away this year with a very valuable certificate that will undoubtedly assist them in their future endeavours.
Liz Collodel, Teacher
Keys for Life
Keys4Life is a pre-driver program that helps to educate young people about safer road use and allows them to sit their Learner's Permit Theory Test. Preparing young people for safer driving is an important component of the Western Australian road safety strategy as each year young drivers are over-represented in road crash statistics.
Students also learn about the importance of planning when going out, and strategies to help ensure their safety. This endorsed program is delivered as part of our Centres focus on promoting independence for our students.
Congratulations to Shanelle Kelly-Rickards and Carter Farrell on passing their “Learners Permit Theory Test” of the Keys for Life Pre-Driver Education Program this year. Well done.

Bushranger Camp at Woodman Point . . .
The annual Bushranger Cadet Camp was held at Woodman Point in Coogee for two nights, three days. We also offered, for students who were not comfortable staying over night, the opportunity to come for the day. This camp is an important part of the bushranger cadet level one course.
The camp was a great opportunity for students to make friends and try new activities.
Students enjoyed activities ranging from high ropes courses, vertical challenge, flying fox, team building activities, archery, catapults, kite making, bike riding, escape from quarantine and beach games. We were lucky to have access to catering so we all enjoyed a cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner evey day.
Lastly, a big thankyou to Tabea Henke for organising the event and making sure it was a success for all. Her dedication to the bushranger program is exceptional.
Bushranger Unit Leader
Bushranger Rewards Excursion . . .
Congratulations to Paige, Domenic, Rory, James, Ryan and Sam on receiving the "Bushranger of the Year" award. Students were invited to a special day out at Perth Zoo. The highlight was feeding the giraffes. What a fun day we all had.
Giraffe feeding time at Perth Zoo.
Bushrangers . . .
Students have had an engaging Term 4 in Bushrangers. Our annual camp was this term and was enjoyed by all.
The Bushranger activities this Term started with Waste Wise day, learning about how long our rubbish takes to break down in the environment.
After the camp, we had a quieter week, with students giving feedback on the camp including meals and activities. This is used to help plan the next years camp.
In week four we had our highlight activity, which was inviting Simon Cherriman back to view our nesting boxes. He used a go pro on a long stick to reach up to the nesting boxes and had this attached to an ipad. We were able to look inside each box and three had some activity past and present. A young parrot (the last of the group) was still in one box and was very noisy, squawking at the go pro. We could see in other boxes, signs of activity but had missed the chicks. Our galah box, would have had chicks but unfortunately native bees had plugged the drain holes. Hopefully next year we will have baby galahs.
Kanyana Wildlife came in with a variety of animals for us to touch and learn about. We also had David Ryce, a volunteer at Kanyana, share his knowledge and experience with the group.
Students went to their final 'Adopt a Spot' this Term and enjoyed a BBQ lunch. The 'Adopt A Spot's' are an important part of the conservation concepts, ensuring the youth take more ownership of their environments in the future.
To finish off, students had Vanessa from Bush Wisdom Survival, come and share her knowledge on bushcraft skills and how to cope with potential survival situations in the bush or suburban natural disasters closer to home.
Tabea Henke, Bushranger Unit Leader
School Reunion . . .
Our annual school reunion was held at the Centre this term. It was lovely to hear what our past students have been doing since leaving school, with some working and some volunteering their time. Bean@bility supplied a delicious as always morning tea. Thank you to KJ, Ella, Josh, Amber, Michael, Pete, Sofia, Dylan S, Dylan A and Sajjad for attending.
STEM . . .
During this Term in STEM, Cyril Jackson Senior College Education Support Centre took on a challenge like no other...
We entered a Lego Robotics competition open to the Education Support North Network... Which means we were one of 13 schools that entered!
Our task was simple, we had to create something out of Lego that was either sustainable/eco-friendly, Shelter or Assessable. The build also had to have motorised parts that we would code using our iPad. Our students voted on building a tree house that had a crane element that could pull people to the top of the tree.
We worked as a team throughout the term to learn each other's strengths and create our final project. After which, all the schools met up and had the judges marked each school's project on a variety of criteria. Although we didn't win the overall award on the day, we won a trophy for showcasing Resilience! It was a fun day, and I can't wait to enter next year.
Mikail Koulianos, Teacher
Art . . .
Students created springtime ceramic pot plants and other artworks during Term 3. Students worked with clay, creating two pinch pots and joining them together before adding features and decorating. Well done! Artwork by Linda, Michael, Domenic, Paige, Shannon, Carter and Kiana.
Students have been busy in Term 4 putting pen to paper, creating some lovely art pieces - title pages, self-portraits and superhero character designs. Well done Art class! Please visit our Facebook page for more photos.

Clay Pot Plants and Saucers
DRUMBEAT . . .
DRUMBEAT (Discovering Relationships using Music, Beliefs, Emotions, Attitudes and Thoughts) students have had a great semester, learning about their own emotions and how they can impact their relationships.
Students now know the three basic hand movements and can also play a couple of different rhythms. It has been a rewarding year, and the performance from each group has been outstanding.
Tabea Henke, Teacher
Dance . . .
Over the last 2 terms I have had the pleasure of teaching some wonderful students to dance! It is not all about dance, but the joy it can bring. We have worked on different exercises to assist with coordination, cross-body movements and keeping in time with music.
It isn't about getting all the moves. My main focus is that they get part of it- whether that be just the feet movement, just the arms, or just the joy! It also has been a great team building exercise for the students. Being able to work together in a group, understand spatial awareness and being a team.
I am excited to showcase what the students have been working so hard on at the graduation assembly. I look forward to being able to continue this opportunity for the students in the future.
Breanne Lucas, Dance Teacher
2022 Student Councillors . . .
The 2022 student councillors have proven to be a group of young people who have displayed a strong sense of duty and responsibility to all of the students at CJ’s to ensure our students have a voice that is heard at school. They have lead our weekly student assemblies, growing in confidence in public speaking which is a skill that will be valuable in life.
The 29th of November will be our final award assembly the councillors will run for 2022 as the year draws to end and we reflect on how many things our student councillors have achieved.
Last week our student councillors spoke so passionately about what it has been like to be a student councillor and why others should nominate for the role to a group of our new upcoming yr 12/13 students.
The process for the 2023 student councillors has begun with many students interested in putting their name in to be nominated for 2023. The new councillors will be announced at the graduation assembly.
I would like to say a huge thank you to all our student’s councillors David Atkins, Chebar Killian, Simon Lin, Tahlia Lemierz, Xavier Yeats, Raymond Nash and school hosts -Deeghan Bovell, Phoenix Tedge and Ella Morris you all should be proud of the legacy you have worked hard to leave at our wonderful school.
