Principal's Message . . .
I am pleased to present our new school newsletter platform Schoolzine. We hope that you enjoy accessing the new format.
We started Term 1 of 2022 with the knowledge that we would be dealing with COVID and the uncertainty of what that would mean for us on a daily basis at our school. It has been a challenging term in certain aspects in terms of staffing but we have a wonderful team here at Cyril Jackson and they have been flexible in their approach to ensure face-to-face teaching and learning continues. I thank them for their hard work and dedication towards ensuring students feel happy, safe and content at school and achieve positive outcomes in all aspects of their education.
We have a robust School Council who met for the first time this term. The School Council comprises of staff, parents and community members. Tonia Bovell is our School Council Chair, our parent representatives are Lyndsey Milieri and Michelle Tedge. Our Community member is Jenny Fuller and staff include myself, Sam Brassington and Rebecca Dalgleish. I would like to thank all of our School Council members for their input and time supporting the school to achieve its goals, it is greatly appreciated.
Students have enjoyed some excellent hands-on experiences this term through the Bush Ranger Cadets WA Program including assembling and strategically placing nesting boxes in the trees to attract birds and wildlife into our beautiful school grounds and also created bee hotels. We are very lucky to be co-located on such a beautiful school site where the natural environment is respected and enjoyed. Our Permaculture garden is in full bloom thanks to the hard work and dedication of staff and students involved in this qualification.
Our Photography students are demonstrating exceptional skills taking professional photos of the whole school community. Bean@bility and Bike@bility continue to provide opportunities for students to develop key work skills and runs alongside Certificate I in Work Skills. Our Retail Qualification is now linked to Enterprise and our students are busy creating Marketing and Merchandising Plans and creating items to sell at markets. We are running a Café Culture Skill Set here at Cyril Jackson SC ESC with students also attending from other schools. Well done Andy Dixon for successfully becoming qualified to deliver this Course.
We also deliver a Certificate II Qualification- Certificate II in General Education for Adults. Students are working meticulously through this qualification which links directly to functional Maths and English concepts.
Our Yoga, Drumbeat and Rock & Water programs have helped to keep our students regulated and mindful during this term.
I would like to thank our parents and carers for fully supporting Cyril Jackson SC ESC in everything that we do here at school, you make our jobs very easy. I hope you all have a relaxing and safe holiday break and I look forward to welcoming students and staff back in Term 3.
Open Days @ CJ’s - We are holding two School Open Days - 28 June and 4 August, from 8.45am to 11am for parents of prospective new students. If you know of any parents/carers that may be interested in enrolling their child at Cyril Jackson SC ESC, please inform them of our ‘Open Day’ session on 4 August. B1 Classroom
B1 has enjoyed a productive start to the year, with students Blake, Noah, Luci, Paige, Shanelle, Linda, Lachlan and Omar. We give a special note to our two new students to the Centre, Shanelle and Linda. Students have been practising using The Zones of Regulation to help them manage their emotions. We have also focused on respect, with a key focus on “think before you speak”.
Our highlight was an outing to Sandy Beach Reserve. Students planned this excursion, including what we would do, eat and how we would get to the venue. Students were in charge of running the BBQ lunch, where they demonstrated great team work to operate the BBQ and cook the sausages. Students also enjoyed an excursion to Kings Park with B5 class. We visited the Anzac memorial and the natural gardens. Students enjoyed being outside in the beautiful weather overlooking Perth and the Swan River.
We also farewelled Blake, one of our valued class members who has moved to another region. We wish Blake all the best.

B2 Classroom
The start of 2022 for our new B2 students to Cyril Jackson SC ESC has been a very action packed and enjoyable experience. This energetic and charismatic bunch of young men have all done tremendously well as they found their way around the school both physically and socially. I have been very impressed with how quickly they have been able to create new relationships with their peers and be so confident in approaching all that Cyril Jackson SC ESC has to offer. At the start of the semester students of B2 focused on building team camaraderie with their fellow classmates and learned what was going to be ahead of them in their new school.
Students have been busy discovering their interests in STEM, Home Economics, Art and realising the importance of work skills as they dived into Bike@bility and Bean@bility workplace simulations. In between their English, Math, Health and Independent Living classroom work, B2 have thoroughly enjoyed their Community Access excursions to Perth City and our engaging tour through Optus Stadium. This semester I have been so pleased to see each student embrace their new school and become more confident as they have made such a positive and encouraging impact in their learning within the classroom and their experiences during school outings.

B3 Classroom
In B3 we have had an eventful term 2. With many Birthdays, Events and Excursions, the term has flown by.
Students have shown great resilience coping with the changes throughout the term. I would in particular like to thank the Year 13 student councillors and hosts for demonstrating the values that Cyril Jackson upholds.
Highlights of the term have included the Sorry Week incursion for Bushrangers, Community access to Optus Stadium and the Kalability soccer carnival. We have also been working on handling money, creating budgets and how to prepare for a job interview. I hope all students have a relaxing winter holiday and are excited for term 3!

B4 Classroom
B4 classroom have had a busy and exciting start to the year, filled with many interesting and enjoyable activities providing a variety of opportunities to learn. Students have undertaken many activities including Preliminary Units, Work Place Learning, Certificate Courses, STEM, Keys 4 Life, ASDAN, Bushranger Cadets, Community Access excursions, Bike@bility, and Bean@bility.
In our preliminary math unit, we have concentrated on developing student’s independence in the community. We have practised skills with money handling and improved our communication skills. During our class shopping program, all the students demonstrated their cash handling and team work skills, and they made some healthy and tasty meals.
All students have contributed to a great learning environment, where their confidence in different activities has grown, because students encourage each other and enjoy each other’s company and successes.

B5 Classroom
B5 has enjoyed a great start to the year in 2022, with students Kallan, Samuel, Carter, Michael and Ryan. In this time, we have explored some deep and interesting topics alongside our regular curriculum – including doing source analyses on Alexander the Great, studying the Ukraine conflict in depth, making (in my opinion) a professional grade short film, cooking Greek cuisine and doing some fun science experiments.
The B5 students have enjoyed collaborating with each other during class projects and having autonomy over their decision making (such as writing proposals on where we go on community access excursions). One of the highlights of the term was our outing to Midland Gate to play a game of lazer tag, where students had to plan their transport there and back.
One sad point is that we had to bid farewell to our friend Kallan, who commenced an apprenticeship at a barbershop. We wish him every success in his future.

B6 Classroom
It has been a fun and productive first semester in B6 classroom. Our graduating students have been working extremely hard thinking about their future pathways as they excitedly head towards the end of their schooling. At the beginning of the semester, students created Vision Boards where they noted down their goals and aspirations that they are working towards this year.
Students have been busily creating career portfolios in English, where they have used a number of research methods to find out about jobs that they are interested in and the pathways or training needed to be able to gain employment in these jobs.
In between their classroom work, students have enjoyed some Community Access outings to supermarkets in the local vicinity. Students planned the transport and costs involved in purchasing ingredients to make lunch for themselves and their peers. We recently enjoyed a fun outing to Optus Stadium too!
B6 students have enjoyed learning about and celebrating the various cultures of their peers during Harmony Week this semester, creating ‘Multicultural Australia’ posters that highlighted their cultural backgrounds and the origins of their favourite music, food and hobbies.

Photography
Term 1 this year saw the inception of the endorsed program ‘ASDAN Photography’. In class, photography students have learnt about the different parts of the brand new DLSR cameras, some photography theory and have taken photos using different techniques. Whenever students ventured out onto the field to take photos, they had a theme to focus on. Themes for this term included texture, zoom, angles and the rule of thirds. Students also manipulated these photos on photo editing software – honing in on their graphic design skills.
Photography students were also trusted to take official photos at school events, including ANZAC Day, the staff versus student’s basketball game and Harmony Day. These photos have been used in official school correspondence including the school Facebook page! I look forward to introducing more techniques for students to practise around the school and on excursions, and letting them document events that are occurring around the school.
Certificate I Permaculture
Students in Certificate I in Permaculture are learning about sustainable ways to improve permaculture practices, and the benefits for communities, by applying the ethics of permaculture care for the earth; care for people; take only your fair share; and the 12 Principles of Permaculture.
During the semester, students have been busy weeding out the garden beds and preparing raised beds for growing a selection of vegetables. Each student is allocated one raised bed/wicking bed, where they are growing a selection of vegetables and herbs from seedlings.
The students learn how to maintain tools and equipment which they will use when carrying out various tasks to maintain the workplace. The course highlights the importance of Occupational Health and Safety in a workplace and simulated workplace i.e. garden environment. Applying the methods of Organic production and plant care along with conservation practices where the students work on restoring an established Native Plant Garden.
Kal@bility Soccer Carnival
Students participated in the annual Kal@bility Soccer Carnival at Hartfield Reserve in Forrestfield in week 8. Students had a very successful day versing a range of schools in divisions 1, 2 and 3.
Mr Dixon’s division 2 team were successful in taking home the winning trophy. All 4 teams showed fantastic sportsmanship, teamwork and athletic ability on the day and should all be very proud of themselves.
Design and Technology
Wood work students have been busy this semester. In Term 1 students made a small wooden racing car, with great success. In Term 2 students made a lovely 3 tiered tea light holder for Mothers/special someone day gift.
Candle holder project
Bushrangers WA Cadets Incursions
Bushranger Cadets incursion - Students learnt about the importance of bees and their important roles - such as pollinating our food crops. To start off, students first observed bees around our school, then students enjoyed creating little bee hotels made out of bamboo, cardboard, paper and pvc piping. The bee hotels were then placed around the school, based on the data students collected. At the end of the session, we got to taste some ironbark and red gum honey.
Bee Hotel Project
National Sorry Day Incursion
As part of our Sorry Day activities, Derek from Yanchep National Park came and shared his knowledge of Aboriginal culture. He shared dreamtime stories, showed us a variety of Aboriginal tools and their Noongar names, demonstrated how to make an axe, voiced a variety of animal sounds and how they look in dance. Students were engaged and enjoyed the learning experience.
Wildlife Nest Box Project
Bushranger Incursion - Simon and Danni came out from Re-cyc-ology Project with equipment to make wildlife nesting boxes. Students had a lot of fun making these nesting boxes which were put up in several trees around the Senior Campus. Within a few days, we already had a few wild birds and animals interested in the nesting boxes.
