Important Dates Term 3
Principals Message
Term 2 has seen lots of exciting and interesting events for students to enjoy and learn from. We have enjoyed Bush Ranger activities and excursions to Sandy Beach and AQWA. Classes have enjoyed their class excursions to Midland Gate Shopping Centre, the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle and Zone Bowling Morley. Accessing the community is vital to student learning so that they are able to practice skills learned in the community setting.
Students enjoyed four Water Safety lessons at Swan Active Ballajura in week 7. Students were a credit to our school ensuring they got the very best out of this valuable experience.
Our School Council held their second meeting of the year and attendees were involved in discussions guiding the school’s strategic planning, future growth and a reflection on how far we have come as a School. We appreciate our School Council members' time and contribution and really look forward to sharing where we are at in our School journey each Term. We will schedule an 'open meeting' where any community members can attend in Term 3, date to be advised.
As part of our transition planning, we held a Support@bility info session involving Intelife, Special Olympics and Cahoots. The event was extremely well attended by seven families. Feedback around the presenters was positive and families had an opportunity to network with each other while enjoying a delicious morning tea.
I was extremely proud of our students participating in the Kal@bility All Stars Soccer Carnival held at Hartfield Park, Forrestfield. Our teams participated with energy and commitment and had many successful moments during the game not only demonstrating exceptional skills, but supporting each other wholeheartedly every step of the way.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff for their hard work and commitment in ensuring that our students achieve positive outcomes in all aspects of their education and giving them a wide range of experiences to apply the skills taught in classrooms to real life contexts.
This Term we had the pleasure of inviting Bob Gildare to represent the RSL Subbranch at Bassendean to our ANZAC Day Assembly to give the commemorative address. All floral contributions were made into wreaths by individual classes which were taken to the Bassendean memorial later in the day.
We also celebrated Harmony Day with the Senior Campus, raffling one of our restored bikes from Bike@bility, catering for the whole event through the organisation of a sausage sizzle and for the first time having our Student Councillors run a stall to share ideas about positive mindfulness strategies.
We will be holding our second CJSC ESC Open Day on Thursday 8th August, details to follow in due course. Please ensure you share this date if you know of parents who might be interested to visit the school for future enrolment purposes.
Samantha Brassington, Deputy Principal at our school, has secured a Principal position at Kalamunda Primary School ESC. We would like to thank Sam for her positive contribution to our School and wish her all the very best in her new position.
Feedback from our school community is vital to ensure ongoing school improvement. You will have received a link to complete a Culture Survey. Please complete by the due date Monday 8 July, 2024.
I wish all of our families a relaxing Term 2 break and thank you for your ongoing support of our School.

B1 Classroom
Term 2 has been an action packed one for the B1 classroom. In between our regular learning we had a lot of special activities and unique learning opportunities occur that made these 11 weeks seem like a blur.
We spent time in class learning about 'Reconciliation Week' and read Aboriginal Poetry. The students begun to construct their plastic straw bridges, using the STEM process to problem solve and troubleshoot.
Outside of the classroom, the soccer carnival was a huge success, which saw Rhys get a division one coaches award. On our community access excursion we played two rounds of bowling - which saw students work on their transportation and numeracy skills. Finally, our students enjoyed a Bushranger excursion to AQWA!

B2 Classroom
Term 2 has been remarkably productive and eventful for the B2 classroom. Students have shown significant development in Literacy, working on reading, spelling, comprehension, and in numeracy - progressing through number and money concepts.
In our community access program students have been excelling in working as a team using public transport. Students had an incredible time at our recent trip to the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle as we explored the James Cameron Challenging the Deep Exhibition. As well, students are making excellent progress through their Preliminary Units in Math, English and Health and have come a long way in their courses completing units in Retail, Café Culture, ASDAN Personal Care and Employment Pathways.
Students have been dedicated and enthusiastic in their simulated work placements at Bean@bility, Ashfield Primary, Cuddly Animal Farm, and West Care, developing essential skills to thrive in a working environment. The B2 classroom also participated in various offsite activities this Term, including the Bush Ranger excursion to Red Hill Landfill, AQWA, Kal@bility soccer carnival, and swimming lessons. It has been an action-packed and entertaining Term 2, and we look forward to an eventful Semester 2.

B4 Classroom
B4 classroom have had a busy Term 2, filled with many interesting and enjoyable activities, providing a variety of opportunities to learn. Students have continued working on many activities including Preliminary Units, Work Place Learning, Certificate Courses, STEM, Keys 4 Life, ASDAN, Bushranger Cadets, Community Access excursions, Rock and Water, Photography, Bike@bility, and Bean@bility.
As part of our Preliminary English program, students are investigating career and education pathways and opportunities for when they leave school. In our Preliminary Math unit, we have concentrated on developing student’s independence in the community. Students have also been supported in planning trips using the Transperth Planner, using this method in planning our transport for the Community Access excursion. We have practised skills with money handling and improved our communication skills. Our Community Access excursion involved catching public transport, a bus and train to Midland Gate Shopping Centre, where the students visited three variety stores and purchased a t-shirt to the value of $15.00. All the students picked t-shirts and then tried them on in the change rooms to ensure they were the correct size. After visiting all the shops, the students decided which t-shirt they liked best and demonstrated their cash handling and communication skills to purchase their t-shirt. Students behaved in a mature and positive manner and enjoyed choosing their t-shirt and then having lunch together in the food court.
It has been fantastic to see the student’s confidence in trying different activities grow throughout the Term.

B6 Classroom
We have had an action packed Term in B6 classroom, completing a wide variety of activities both in and out of the classroom. Starting the Term off with an excursion to RISE gym in Maylands, students participated in a Body Balance class and enjoyed lunch on the Café strip.
We have also had events such as swimming lessons and Reconciliation Week where students have had to leave their comfort zones and test themselves.
We have also welcomed three new students, with Jacob, Ethan and Liam joining the class, and have already settled in and feel like they belong.
I would like to thank the many staff who have helped the students achieve so much this Semester and am looking forward to starting Semester 2!

Certificate II CGEA
This Term has been a productive and informative one for the CGEA students. We have enjoyed learning how to write an email with proper etiquette, students have created a variety of documents for work processes and have learned to create action plans that can ensure we follow the proper steps to complete a variety of projects.
More interestingly though, we have done a lot of self reflection during our units of competency this Term. Analysing our soft skills and hard skills that we each have, along with areas we would like to improve in. Students also created a career portfolio and researched different career paths and how to get there.

Certificate I Employment Pathways
Employment Pathways is a qualification which reflects the role of individuals who are developing the necessary skills in preparation for work. It provides a range of introductory skills and knowledge to provide individuals with an understanding of a work environment. This Semester students have been engaged in using a variety of resources to complete a range of assessment tasks.
Students have been learning strategies to enhance interpersonal and communication skills for personal effectiveness. They demonstrated the ability to interact effectively in the workplace by creating formal and informal texts like letters and emails. Additionally, students investigated the importance of working healthily and safely, both for themselves and others, and how to respond to emergency incidents. These activities have equipped them with essential skills for professional and personal development.

ASDAN - Bike@bility Program
For 2024, our Bike@bility Program is now following the ASDAN “Practical Workshop” format. This format provides a good, logical structure to the learning which helps with consistency of the topics delivered and provides the students with a balance of both theory and practical elements. Also, their ASDAN portfolio will be something the students can use in the future job seeking endeavours to help demonstrate skills learned during the Program.
As always, the Bik@bility Program still allows us to mentor the students on expected behaviours in a workplace, while the hands on, practical work creates a relaxed atmosphere. Amelia, Bailey, Brad and Duay all contribute to the positive atmosphere at Bike@bility.
Students are enjoying the ASDAN Program this year and it is pleasing to see the teamwork, relationships and confidence build. In particular, we have some students wanting to pursue Certificate 2 pre-apprenticeship courses based on the enjoyment they have discovered using their “hands on” skills.

Harmony Day Bike Raffle
Our Bike@bility students restored a bike to raffle off at the Harmony Day event in week 4. To enter the bike raffle, students were asked to write about what Harmony Day meant to them. Herzen was the lucky winner of the raffle and took home the prize!
Here are some of the awesome responses:
"To promote collaboration between everyone no matter who they are, their past and background. Be in peace and appreciate each other."
"Harmony Day means that we can all come together as people, and we can celebrate that we are all different and respect each other's cultures. We can learn about each other, be more accepting and increase our sense of belonging."
"Embrace everyone’s diversity and enjoy what different people bring to one another"
Bushrangers
As part of Bushrangers, students participate in excursions and activities at school. Students have continued learning about how we can create a more sustainable community, how our actions impact the environment, focussing on recycling and reusing in our everyday lives.
Our Adopt A Spot location for this year is Sandy Beach Reserve, and in week 5 we inspected and cleaned up the area , recording the amount and types of rubbish we found. Students worked in small teams with staff support and also recorded types of wildlife, particularly the types of birds present and then had a bbq lunch at Sandy Beach Reserve. The students also attended AQWA and participated in the Wildlife Rescue Program, focussing on six types of Turtles. Students had the opportunity to then look around all the other exhibits and sea life at the aquarium.
This Term, students have been fantastic ambassadors for our school and the Bushranger program during all activities and excursions.
