Principal's Message . . .
What a wonderful Term 3 we have had with so many events happening in our school and in the local community. Welcome to Melissa Coultas- Jones who has joined our team this term as B1 class teacher and has fitted in to our school community so well.
As part of NAIDOC week, we invited Kylie Graham, a local Aboriginal artist, into school to work with our students to create a piece of artwork with the theme reflecting the importance of listening, mentorship, connectedness and learning from the past to create better futures. Kylie’s idea to reflect the art through time and space sat beautifully alongside our thinking of being part of the bigger picture and there is no vaster space than the universe itself. Students engaged wholeheartedly in the workshop and practiced mindfulness during the session.
Also as part of NAIDOC week, selected students from Bean@bility worked with Tanya Healy, an Industry professional Chef creating a delicious menu for a NAIDOC themed lunch for invited guests. Students demonstrated exceptional hospitality skills serving dishes including damper and smoked garlic butter, crocodile dumplings in an aromatic broth and wattle seed ice-cream with macadamia meringue and hibiscus syrup. Positive feedback from distinguished guests resulted in our students being invited to be part of all future events in order to showcase their well-developed skills.
I was overwhelmed and humbled to be presented with a piece of artwork created by Luciana Gill this term. The artwork represents the important things in life including family, kinship, friendship and our journey as a whole. As an artist Luciana has the ability to create beautiful art that tells a profound story. The art piece sits proudly in the Admin office.
Our School Council held their third meeting for the year and attendees were involved in discussions guiding the school’s strategic planning, financial position and future growth.
Transition meetings with parents and other stakeholders are ongoing and our Support@bility session this term was presented by DDWA with the focus around advocacy and transition planning for life after school.
I was extremely proud of selected students participating in the Perth Wildcats All Ability Basketball Carnival held at Bendat Basketball Centre. It was no surprise that a student of ours was the recipient of the Sportsmanship Award.
Our participation in the Kal@bility AFL Carnival was also a huge success and enjoyed by all, with some incredible skills at play and all of our students played the 'right way' with courtesy, fair play and sportsmanship. Well done to all students and staff involved.
Our Annual Bush Ranger Camp to Ern Halliday Recreation Camp was a huge success with students pushing themselves out of their comfort zones to attempt activities they might not have attempted previously. We saw a real connectedness and supportive bonds between students, all essential to form sustainable friendships.
The School Ball was extremely well attended with 35 students and 15 staff enjoying an evening of delicious food, music and dance. Our students were a real credit to the school looking extremely glamorous and practising exceptional social skills and table etiquette. Lifelong memories were created as they embraced every aspect of the evening. Thank you to all staff who gave their time to support this wonderful social event.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff for their hard work and commitment this term for ensuring our students are successful in all aspects of their learning. You work tirelessly and with great enthusiasm to create a host of learning opportunities inside and outside of the school environment. We are lucky to have each and everyone of you on our team. Three of our staff have been nominated for West Australian Ed Support and Administrators Association (WAESPAA) Awards in recognition of their ability to make a difference in the lives of our students. Congratulations to Elizabeth Collodel, Louise Southern and Louise Tilli on your well deserved nominations.
This Term we continue to deliver VET and Endorsed programs alongside programs that promote mindfulness and self-regulation.
Our second Open Day ensured that information was delivered to prospective parents by a presentation and a school tour.
I wish all of our families a relaxing Term 3 break and thank you for your ongoing support of our school.
“If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself” Henry Ford.

School fees and charges . . .
Thank you to families who have already paid their child’s school fees and charges. If you haven’t already paid, please pay as soon as possible. We use your fees to support individual educational programs offered at CJSC ESC and budget for full payment of subjects and other specific activities the student’s undertake.
If you are having trouble paying, please contact the MCS, Rebecca Dalgleish, on 9413 4850 to make a payment plan arrangement.
B1 Classroom . . .
It has been a very successful start to Term 3 and I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to work back at Cyril Jackson SC ESC with the amazing B1 classroom. All the students have made me feel very welcome, and the classroom is running well.
We have been working on our comprehension books about Fremantle prison in correlation with working through our community access program. B1 and B6 classrooms joined together to attend a tour around Fremantle prison where the tour guide educated us on the convicts that frequented the prison and discovered the history of Fremantle Prison from its construction in the 1850's until the end of the convict era in 1886. We discussed the history through stories and finished off our day at Subway.
For community access we had the great opportunity to visit the science museum Scitech. Exploring science and engaging in an amazing planetarium experience, followed by pizza!
For ASDAN independent living we had a fun visit to the local laundrette to learn about using the washing machine and tumble dryers, the students planned the timetable to the laundrette and decided they wanted to make the visit a little fun by recording an entertaining video on how not to complete the laundry, the excursion was lots of fun, and everyone took part.
So far, the staff and students feel this has been a rewarding term
Melissa Coultas - Jones, B1 Classroom Teacher
Laundrette visit. . .
B2 Classroom . . .
The start of Semester 2 has been remarkably productive and eventful for the B2 classroom. Students have been working hard during Independent Living as they have been learning how to create budget sheets and work towards financial goals.
Students have also come a long way in their Certificate courses completing units in Retail, Towards Independence and Employment Pathways.
In Community Access students are becoming more confident with public transport as they interpret key features of the Transperth map and determine their own route to and from destinations. Students really enjoyed our Community Access excursion to the Egyptian Exhibition at WA Museum where students journeyed through the Nile unravelling the mysteries of Ancient Egypt featuring coffins, mummies and statues.
This Term, B2 students got to embark on their first school camp whether it was staying the night or joining in on the daily adventures. It was incredible to see the positivity and involvement of all the B2 students as they enjoyed many activities with their peers - from flying foxing to shooting targets with a bow and arrow. It’s not easy attending a three-day camp at your new school, however I couldn’t be more impressed with the courage and motivation of each student as they got amongst all the fun and chaos.
It has been an action-packed and entertaining Term 3 with the CJ School Ball and Football Carnival in our final weeks.

B4 Classroom . . .
B4 classroom have had a busy and exciting Term 3, filled with many interesting and enjoyable activities providing a variety of opportunities to learn. Students have undertaken many activities including Bushranger Camp, Work Place Learning, Bushranger Cadets, Community Access excursions, AFL Sports carnival and School Ball.
As part of our preliminary English program the students have continued to investigate career and education pathways and opportunities for when they leave school. During our class Community Access excursions we have focussed on developing the students independence with them being involved in the planning for the excursions, including travel planning, creating the itinerary, opening hours for the venue, costs of transport and entrance, and availability of amenities such as toilets and food vendors etc. All the students demonstrated their understanding of using public transport, cash handling skills when making purchases, communicating in various settings and working as a team on a shared goal of an excursion.
All the students have contributed to a great learning environment, where their confidence in different activities has grown, students encourage each other and enjoy each other’s company and successes.

B5 Classroom . . .
Term 3 has been busy and eventful for the B5 classroom. We achieved some of our English and Maths IEP goals through an Ancient Egyptian context. The students enjoyed doing their regular work through this theme, in addition to being extended in some STEM style projects such as creating a pyramid out of toothpicks, and our virtual Ancient Egypt that was created in Minecraft.
This all cumulated in our Community Access excursion to the WA Museum, where we thoroughly enjoyed the Ancient Egyptian exhibition. Students were experts by the time they attended this excursion, so it was nice to see them point things out that they had been learning throughout the term.
Other notable highlights of this Term include our structured debate about whether social media is good for society or not, and the basketball and football carnivals. Great work everybody.
Mikail Koulianos, B5 Classroom Teacher
B6 Classroom . . .
It's been an enriching term of learning and growth for our B6 students, and we're excited to share some of the highlights with you.
It has been an absolute pleasure to teach the B6 students this term. We have observed their impressive utilisation of literacy and numeracy skills, especially as they completed their preliminary modules. It's wonderful to see their progress and dedication to learning.
Beyond academic achievements, B6 students have been actively working on their readiness for the professional world. They've been developing skills that will serve them well in their future careers, ensuring a strong foundation for their endeavours.
Week 6, students embarked on a captivating journey to Fremantle Prison. The tour provided a unique opportunity to step back in time and understand the daily lives of prisoners through the Main Cell Block and exercise yards. This hands-on experience allowed them to gain insights into historical realities.
Throughout the week, our students have continued to gain valuable insights into various workplaces across the community. From Vinnies Stores to Better Pets and Gardens, and Cuddly Animal Farm, these experiences have broadened their horizons and expanded their understanding of different roles.
Our annual Football Carnival was a huge success. Students have been improving their football skills during sports sessions.
Term 3 Community Access was to Scitech where students had fun exploring some amazing things.
It's been a fantastic Term 3, filled with growth and exploration. I’m excited about the year ahead with our dedicated B6 students.

Bushrangers . . .
Our annual Bushranger camp was held at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp and was a great success. Students participated in a variety of activities and worked as a team, challenging themselves and demonstrating great maturity in following the camp instructors directions. All students behaved in a responsible manner, and proved adaptable when the big storm hit on Wednesday night, by encouraging and supporting each other while having fun.
Students demonstrated all the qualities of both Bushranger Cadets and CJ students and the camp staff commented on the outstanding behaviour and general willingness to try new things by our students.
It was great to see the day students also enjoy being part of the school camp, day students made a yummy BBQ lunch for the students and staff returning to school on Friday. Please view our Facebook page for more photos.

Sports Carnival . . .
Week 8, students competed in the Kick@bility AFL carnival at Kostera Oval. Everyone gave their all, kicking goals, spoiling marks and taking on their opponents.
Although we didn't come home with any wins, I am exceptionally proud of everyone on the sportsmanship and effort shown. Bring on the Cricket carnival in term 4!

Retail . . .
We had a busy Term 3 in Certificate 1 Retail building on our studies in Semester one. Students have been working in our simulated business Toast ‘N Shake practicing customer service and organisation skills learnt in the course. Students confidence in completing tasks, asking for assistance when required and interacting with each other and customers has increased throughout the Term and the level of independence being developed is a credit to the students and the staff training them.
We have enjoyed many interesting discussions and mock scenarios where the students have demonstrated the theory knowledge they have learned by applying it to possible real life situations and actual situations in our business at Toast ‘N Shake.
Steve Ryce, Teacher
Cafe Culture . . .
Throughout this year, our students have exhibited unwavering dedication and enthusiasm in their pursuit of excellence. Their commitment to mastering both the theoretical aspects and hands-on skills of the course has been truly remarkable. The focal point of their efforts has been the industrial coffee machine, a challenge they embraced wholeheartedly. With unflagging determination, they have not only learned to craft a diverse array of 10 distinct coffee types but have also poured countless hours into perfecting their techniques.
The growth witnessed in each student has been awe-inspiring, particularly evident in their practical endeavors. From confidently configuring the coffee machine to skillfully grinding beans, frothing milk, and meticulously adhering to workplace health and safety procedures, the students have shown an impressive grasp of the craft. Hailing from the Centre, Swan View, and Durham Road ESC, these aspiring baristas have seamlessly blended theoretical excellence with real-world application. As we approach the culmination of the term, I hold an unwavering belief in the capabilities of our Café Culture students to excel in their practical assessments.
The journey they've undertaken this year is a testament to their hard work, growth, and boundless potential.
Andy Dixon, Teacher
Photography . . .
Term 3 in Photography has both been productive and creative. Students have finished their ASDAN portfolios which is a tremendous achievement. These are all ready for moderation.
We have also explored the realm of video making – doing some film studies and eventually creating our own short films. Students studied other short films, came up with an original concept, story boarded it, filmed it, starred in and then edited it! Lots of work went into these, and the students should be very happy with the finished product.
Mikail Koulianos, Teacher
Rock and Water . . .
The students have built on their efforts in Rock and Water this Term, and are learning about the balance in behaviour between being “The Rock” where a person is firm and “The Water” where a person is more flexible and willing to compromise.
We practice mindfulness and reflect on and consider the best way to behave in various situations and settings. There is a high degree of group work and practical exercises and the students have performed these showing great care and respect for each other. Their willingness to participate in the activities and discuss with the group times they have been the rock or water has increased throughout the year and we have all realised that the best way of interacting with others in all social and work settings is a combination of Rock and Water strategies.
The students have used skills in Rock and Water to plan for upcoming events such as sports carnivals, work placements, and introducing ourselves at social gatherings. The development of good social-emotional skills helps students to develop their own identity and self-knowledge, assisting in making decisions/choices, and social contacts.
Steve Ryce, Teacher
Design & Technology . . .
Over the past two terms, we have moved into the workshop and started using a wide array of tools to complete some new projects.
In term 2, students completed their own trucks, personalising the designs and creating some truly unique and memorable pieces. After marking the base of the trucks, students had to use saws, chisels, sandpaper and files to shape the pieces. Once they were glued together, the students applied a paint scheme of their choice and took the creations home.
For term 3, we have begun creating a tic tac toe board. This is presenting a new challenge as this requires precise measurement and tool usage. I look forward to seeing these projects completed in the near future.

Thursday is one of my most favourite days of the week.
Students have been learning lots of new skills in a range of really delicious recipes. One of our main achievements is to learn new ways of describing the food that we are preparing and sharing. Expressing food through our senses - taste, texture, smell and look.
Cath MacDougall, Home Ec Teacher
Chicken Nuggets & Sweet Potato Chips . . .
Student Councillors . . .
The student councillors have been busy assisting students around the campus and hosting our weekly student assemblies.
Week 6 was an exciting week as a few councillors were part of the interviews undertaken as part of our school review. The students spoke honestly and articulated the importance of their role in our school. It is a pleasure to see their leadership skills grow as the year passes.
It was a great pleasure to finally hand out our school leavers shirts to our 2023 graduates. There were many smiles that day. It is lovely to see them wear their shirts proudly around the campus.
Term 4 will be with us soon as we look at graduation and transitions out of school or to new classes within the school.
Sam Brassington, Deputy Principal
Yoga . . .
Yoga sessions have been very popular with the students, with 8 students who attend on a weekly basis! Students go through their routine 'check-in' with their feelings, and learning the techniques of deep breathing for relaxation.
Students are aiming to master three yoga positions as part of IEP goals, and apply the breathing moves and techniques learned.
After yoga meditation, students are more relaxed and focused and can reflect on the meditation experience. On a sunny day, students get to participate in yoga outdoors under the trees.
Liz Collodel, Teacher
Yoga under the trees . . .
Music . . .
Throughout 2023, students have been busy learning and playing guitar. Each Thursday in periods 3 and 4, selected students participate in a 45 minute traditional group music lessons. So far, students have learned parts of the instrument, electronic instrument tuning, chord chart reading and playing basic chords.
Currently, students are learning to tune by ear and change between chords with the intent of being able to play personally chosen songs. More advanced students are already doing so with the focus on positivity and enjoyment. It is hoped that these lessons may spark interest in students to continue learning, practising and playing music beyond school.

Hello my name is Luci and I have a passion for art. My latest art project I have been working on is a "National Sorry Day" canvas, which I have donated to CJSC ESC school. I really enjoyed painting this canvas.
My opinion on what National Sorry Day is all about is accepting the past and acknowledging where we are today as a Country and celebrate together.
What's important is to listen to those whose families have been affected and to learn more about our Country's history.
I want people to accept other people's backgrounds and different cultures, with no judgement and to accept ourselves as individuals, to appreciate our Country and be proud of who we are, not just indigenous people.
This is my second piece of art I have donated to my school, and I feel very proud.
