Principal's Message . . .
Term 2 has seen lots of exciting and interesting events for students to enjoy and learn from. We invited RAC into school this term to educate students on the effects of drug and alcohol use. Students were fully engaged and asked lots of pertinent questions around risk taking and personal safety.
We had artist Brenton See on site this term using his creativity and knowledge of flora and fauna, and in particular his love of birdlife in the Western Australian landscape to create a beautiful mural which now adorns our entrance into the school. It really brings a welcoming, vibrant and interesting aesthetic to our school and we are thankful for Brenton’s input and artistic ability to create such an eyecatching piece of artwork.
Our School Council has held their second meeting of the year and School Council members were involved in discussions guiding the school’s strategic planning and future growth.
As part of our transition planning, we held a Support@bility session with seven parents/carers attending and three presenters from Carers WA, ImOnline - who are an innovative mentoring provider who can provide support with all things NDIS and Community Access Squad whose members have access to sports, social opportunities, skill building and micro business opportunities.
Positive feedback from presenters - great communication from the WPL team, great information and support from the WPL team, presentation session length was perfect, flow of presenters topic flowed well, and wonderfully informal.
Positive feedback from attendees - well presented sessions, informative presenters with lived experiences, Information I hadn’t previously known about, learned some new ideas and presentations were very thorough, and learnt new ideas.
I was extremely proud of our students participating in the Kalability All Stars Soccer Carnival held at Hatfield Park, Forrestfield. We saw some incredible skills at play and all of our students played the ‘right way’ with courtesy, fair play and sportsmanship. Well done to all students and staff involved.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff for their hard work and commitment in ensuring that our students achieve positive outcomes in all aspects of their education and giving them a wide range of experiences to apply the skills taught in classrooms to real life contexts.
Community Access this term has enabled our students to apply learned skills in the community setting.
This term we continue to deliver VET and Endorsed programs alongside programs that promote mindfulness and self-regulation.
We will be holding our second CJSC ESC Open Day on Tuesday 15 August. Please ensure you share this date if you know of parents who might be interested to visit the school for future enrolment purposes.
I wish all of our families a relaxing term 2 break and thank you for your ongoing support of our school.
I would like to wish Blair M and Evan O every success in their future as they enter into the workforce and best wishes to Evan K in his further education and training pathway.

B1 Classroom . . .
Our fantastic B1 students have had a wonderful and busy term 2. Students have been working diligently on their Preliminary Units and selected students have enjoyed their work placements out in the community.
In class, we have been learning about Countries in Europe, where students nominated a country of choice to research and learnt about different countries and their cultures. Students gained valuable knowledge from this activity.
We had a wonderful Bush Ranger excursion in week 5 to Yanchep National Park, where students participated in an Aboriginal learning experience with Derek, an Aboriginal Educational Officer at Yanchep. Students gained knowledge of Aboriginal culture and family traditions. Students were shown spears, boomerangs and learnt about different types of native plants used for food and medicine. Students also explored Yanchep National Park and the abundance of wildlife in the area.
Through our community access program, B1 students visited Jett’s gym in Bassendean. Students experienced what it was like to attend a health & fitness club, followed by lunch at Dome. Through our classroom reward system - students were treated to a milkshake of their choice with their lunch. Another community access excursion was to Sandy Beach in Bassendean, where students and staff caught a bus to Sandy Beach, enjoyed a delicious bbq for lunch, then caught a bus back to school. Students and staff have had a busy but rewarding term.
Tabea Henke, B1 Classroom Teacher
B2 Classroom . . .
Term 2 has been remarkably productive and eventful for the B2 classroom. Students have been hard at work during Independent Living and have been learning how to rent, furnish and understand living expenses as they create budget sheets and collate their findings in a powerpoint presentation.
In our community access program students have been excelling in working as a team using public transport. B2 had an incredible time at our recent trip to the WA Shipwreck Museum in Fremantle and all students thought the most interesting display was the reconstructed remains of the VOC ship Batavia. As well as this, students are making excellent progress through their Preliminary Units in Math, English and Health and have come a long way in their certificate courses completing units in Retail, ASDAN Towards Independence and Employment Pathways.
Students have been dedicated and enthused in their simulated work placements in both Bean@bility and Bike@bility as they continue to develop the required skills to successfully thrive in a working environment.
The B2 classroom have participated in a number of offsite activities this term including the Bush Ranger excursion to Yanchep National Park, community access excursion to Fremantle, Kal@bility soccer carnival and a trip to Kings Park. It has been an action-packed and entertaining term 2 and we look forward to an eventful Semester 2.
Andy Dixon, B2 Classroom Teacher
B4 Classroom . . .
B4 students have had a busy term 2, students have enjoyed participating in many interesting activities building on the skills learnt this semester. Students have continued to work on completing their Preliminary Units, and participated in workplace learning, and other programs including certificate courses, STEM, Keys 4 Life, ASDAN, Bushrangers, community access excursions, Bike@bility, Bean@bility, Rock and Water, Drumbeat and Music.
In our Preliminary Math and English Units, we have concentrated on developing student’s independence in the community. We have practised skills involved in planning for an outing. These include using the Transperth planner to plan our journey, and looking at the websites of various venues to determine things including opening and closing times, cost of entry, availability of food, and access to public toilets.
B4 students have been involved in the risk assessment for the various venues we have visited as part of our community access program where students have contributed to class brainstorms to identify potential hazards and ways we can eliminate or reduce the risk of hazards. All students have contributed to a great learning environment, and it has been pleasing to see their confidence working together and individually continue to grow throughout the term.
Steve Ryce, B4 Classroom Teacher
B5 Classroom . . .
It has been a fun productive term in B5 classroom – supplementing our regular curriculum with critical thinking discussions on events that have been occurring around the world, exploring some notable people throughout history (such as Genghis Khan and Ned Kelly) and learning more about the cost of living independently.
In between learning, we also enjoyed our community access excursion and school wide excursions. A highlight of the term was going to Darklight Lazer Tag in Joondalup - which was a team building day for the class. Students enjoyed beating the staff team on the day and working together as a team. The B5 students got stuck in at the Soccer Carnival this term - with Matthew Spooner taking home the Coach's Award in division 1, for practically being a coach himself and displaying very strong leadership skills. Bailey took home the B5 Classroom Achievement award at the end of term 2 assembly for always going above and beyond in helping his fellow peers during class (although he will never admit this!).
In between learning and achieving, B5 students have enjoyed constructing a town on Minecraft together - expressing what they have learned during Independent Living on housing affordability and liveability.
I’m looking forward to creating more great memories with this group of students next semester.
Mikail Koulianos, B5 Classroom Teacher
B6 Classroom . . .
Hello, my name is Amy Mulholland and I teach B6 students on Mondays and Wednesdays. It has been such a pleasure getting to know all B6 students. Every student has been so welcoming and have been able to teach me all about Cyril Jackson SC ESC and the amazing activities they do throughout the week. I have loved learning about each students' interests and passions. We welcomed Tia and Shaya to B6 classroom this term.
On Mondays, students are creating career portfolios, have explored jobs and career options and the skills required. They have also designed comic strips to demonstrate their understanding of work readiness skills.
Students have continued to grow at many workplacements around the community, including Vinnies, City Toyota, Better Pets and Gardens, CJ Library, CJ Café and Cuddly Animal Farm.
Two B6 students left this term - Blair, has been offered an apprenticeship outside of school and Evan has gained employment in the community. A huge congratulations and good luck to both students who will be greatly missed around the Centre!
In Phys Ed this term, students have been working on their soccer skills and have improved each week leading up to our annual Kal@bility soccer carnival.
It has been such a wonderful term and I look forward to the year ahead with B6 students.

AFL Football Carnival . . .
Bush Rangers . . .
Term 2 saw students learn about the importance of safety equipment and personal protective equipment. Students engaged in case studies on bush survival situations and analysed how these could have been prevented. A safety check of the school was conducted and a report based on our findings was completed.
This semester, students have learnt about four of our local National Parks, key information on the upkeep and ongoing conservation for each park. Students created a powerpoint and presented it to the whole school for viewing.
Our excursion to Yanchep National Park was enjoyed by all. Students learnt more about Aboriginal culture through Derek. Students were able to interact with a variety of artifacts. We also completed a bird survey, to see which types of birds live in the area. It was a beautiful day.
Our incursion from Birds of Prey was also a huge success. Students enjoyed learning and interacting with Western Australian Birds of Prey. Discussions took place about their habitats and stories behind the birds who were brought to our school, really helped the students to understand the effect of humans on the environment and wildlife. Another excursion was to Kings Park in week 8. Please check our Facebook page to view more photos.
Our Bushranger annual 3 day camp will be held at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp in term 3, another special highlight of the year.

Certificate I Permaculture . . .
This year, we have five students enrolled in Certificate I Permaculture, and two students from Aveley Secondary College. This term, students have participated in various tasks in the school community garden including composting, planting, collecting leaf material, removing weeds from the native garden area and planting seedlings.
Students have also been busy preparing their individual raised garden beds prior to planting a variety of seedlings. Each week students collect food scraps, coffee remains and eggshells from the school café which are placed into our compost bin.
Other tasks involve maintaining the yarning circle area, sweeping and collecting dry leaves for our compost bin. Each week the students are allocated tasks, where they maintain the weeds growing in the native gardens.

Certificate II CGEA . . .
This semester has been a busy and productive one for CGEA students. We have learnt a lot about work health and safety procedures for various workplaces, planned and created a number of documents using different style guides and have also commenced putting together professional resumes using a template provided.
In addition to this, students have been learning about various documents used in work places such as meeting agendas, incident report forms, leave forms and many more.
Students’ regular attendance and commitment to this Certificate course has seen them progress through their learning at a great pace. It has also been pleasing to see students contribute to the many class discussions and brainstorms had in CGEA lessons which has added to the high level of work that is being produced each week.
With this continued progress, I look forward to seeing CGEA students gaining their full certificate II qualification by the end of this year - a very worthy achievement.
Liz Collodel, Teacher
Certificate I Employment Pathways . . .
Employment Pathways is a qualification which reflects the role of individuals who have not yet entered the workforce, and are developing the necessary skills in preparation for work. It provides a range of introductory skills and knowledge to provide individuals with an understanding of a work environment. This semester students have been engaged in using a variety of resources to complete a range of assessment tasks.
They have been learning about the importance of developing strategies that enhance the interpersonal and communication skills that support personal effectiveness. Students have demonstrated the skills and knowledge required to interact effectively with others in a workplace environment. They have created a variety of formal and non-formal routine workplace texts such as letters and emails. Lastly, students have investigated the importance of knowing how to work in a manner that is healthy and safe in relation to self and others and to respond to emergency incidents.
Andy Dixon, Teacher
ASDAN Independent Living . . .
Students have been focusing on increasing their independence in making their breakfast and a hot drink safely and have made excellent progress. Students should be very proud of what they have achieved this semester.
Students have made the following meals so far - toast, porridge, cereal, crumpets, pancakes, eggs and a big breakfast (bacon, eggs, hash browns). Students sent out invitations to our Principal & Deputy to our Big Breakfast, which showcased their skills.
Students have also been learning about safety in the kitchen when using electrical appliances. This safety aspect is instilled in all lessons. Students have made a variety of hot drinks for themselves and other people.
Part of the program is focused on hygiene and how to maintain a clean environment. This includes cleaning up their own work stations after each use, using a vacuum cleaner safely and wiping down tables. Hand washing is also an important hygiene skill that students are required to do prior to food handling.
Next semester students will be looking at making lunches and dinners and continue to learn how to clean in a house type environment.
Well done to Colin, Shannon, Riley, Hayden and Jordan for all their efforts this term.
Tabea Henke, Teacher
Making Breakfast and cleaning up . . .
STEM . . .
During term 2 in STEM, students engaged in some fun projects, all centred around The Great Wall of China. We learnt some history about this monumental structure – including its function, design and structure. Students then used Tinkercad to design 3D models of towers that are present along The Wall. We then 3D printed them off and connected them all together.
To cap off our learning, we created the Great Wall of China on Minecraft Education – where students worked together on the same server. I purposely gave them very little guidance and was very impressed by the way they cooperated. The final product was very realistic and impressive on a vast (digital) scale. We even had lots of fun creating a mock battle and Wall defence scenario in our world at the end.
Mikail Koulianos, Teacher
DRUMBEAT . . .
DRUMBEAT is an acronym for (Discovering Relationships Using Music, Beliefs, Emotions, Attitudes, & Thoughts).
This term, students have enjoyed learning about the drums, and mastering the basic drumming strokes of bass, tone, slap, and scratch. Learning to work as a team and listening to the beats engages the students and leads to building social skills, and increased self-esteem. Playing rhythm-based games on the drums have also given students the opportunity to discuss and explore topics including peer pressure, communication, and dealing with emotions.
During our weekly sessions, students are making music together as a group, where their confidence to participate and their own ideas and thoughts has increased throughout semester 1. Games and “rumbles” on the drums are a way for students to take ownership and discuss topics and themes that are important to them in a safe place.
The students have been composing and practicing for our performance at the final end of term assembly, and are very excited to be performing for their peers.
Steve Ryce, Teacher
DRUMBEAT Sessions . . .
ANZAC Day . . .
On the first day back in term 2, staff and student councillors organised and took part in an ANZAC Ceremony at the Senior Campus. Mr Dickerson an RSL Representative, delivered a Commemorative Address.
Rory read Flanders Field and Omar read ODE, Sam and Lachlan raised the flags, while Shannon and Shanelle attended to the music. Selected students laid flower wreaths at the bottom of the flag. These wreaths were later laid down at the Bassendean memorial at Bic Reserve.
Open Day at Cyril Jackson SC ESC . . .
