    Principal's Message

I am pleased to provide an article on behalf of our Principal Christine Lester who is on leave until the end of this Term.  We look forward to welcoming Christine back in Term 3.

As we come to the end of another vibrant and eventful Term, I want to take a moment to reflect on the many wonderful experiences and achievements our students and staff have shared.

We began the Term with a moving ANZAC Day commemoration on Wednesday, 30th April, where we were honoured to welcome RSL Representatives David Beecham and George Dickenson. Their presence and words added great meaning to our service as we paid tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our country. Our students paid their respects by laying commemorative wreaths at our flagpoles which were later brought to the Bassendean war memorial.

On 2nd May, we proudly celebrated Autism Awareness Day by wearing bright colours and engaging in a fun jellybean guessing competition, raising funds for the Autism Association of WA. A big congratulations to our lucky winner, Ed, who took home the jar of sweets!

Swimming lessons were a highlight this Term, with students not only improving their swimming technique but also learning valuable survival skills in the water — an essential part of water safety education.

Our first Open Day of the year was a tremendous success. We were thrilled with the strong turnout and positive feedback from visitors.  Thank you to all who helped showcase the spirit and strengths of our school community.

Rainy weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of our students and staff who participated in the Kalability AFL Carnival on 18th June. It was fantastic to see everyone getting involved and showing great team spirit despite the soggy conditions.

Our Bush Ranger cadets enjoyed an educational and engaging trip to Kings Park, where they deepened their understanding of fire awareness and safety as part of their environmental learning program.

Demonstrating their commitment to community service and environmental care, students also rolled up their sleeves to clean up Sandy Beach Reserve for the Keep Australia Beautiful campaign. Their hard work was rewarded with a well-deserved sausage sizzle – a great way to celebrate their efforts!

To round off the Term, we’re all looking forward to our PJ Movie Day, a fun and cosy way to end the Term while raising funds for Telethon, supporting children and families in need.

A huge thank you to our dedicated staff, enthusiastic students, and supportive families for making this a truly jam-packed and rewarding term. Have a restful break – we look forward to another exciting term ahead!

    B1 Classroom

This Term has been an action packed one for B1 Classroom.   In between our regular learning, we had a lot of special activities and unique learning opportunities occur that made these ten weeks seem like a blur.

We spent time in class learning about 'Reconciliation Week' and students created beautiful artwork as a response to a powerful video they saw about the stolen generation. The students continued their planning towards their Mars Colonies which will be created in Term 3.  Swimming lessons went “swimmingly” well – everybody in B1 got stuck right in and showed great resilience in giving everything a go!

Outside of the classroom, the football carnival was (eventually) a huge success after being postponed a few weeks due to poor weather conditions. On our community access excursion, we visited the Museum of Western Australia - which saw students work on their transportation and numeracy skills.  Finally, our students enjoyed the whole school excursion to Kings Park. Well done team!

    B2 Classroom

Term 2 has been a fantastic and rewarding time for the B2 class, with students making remarkable progress across all areas of their learning and development. Now settled into their new school environment, students are showing increased confidence, enthusiasm, and a strong sense of belonging. It’s been wonderful to witness their positive classroom chemistry, as they support one another, share plenty of laughs, and work diligently towards achieving their IEP goals.

Students have demonstrated consistent growth in their certificate courses, ASDAN units, and work placements, with noticeable improvements in attendance and positive behaviour. Their commitment and engagement have been inspiring. Highlights of the term include a fun and educational excursion to Kings Park, where students learned about fire safety while exploring the gardens, as well as visits to Yahava Koffee in Swan Valley, the Perth Career Expo, and Chapels on Whatley.

It has been incredibly rewarding to see B2 students build friendships, engage with course content, and embrace their new school with enthusiasm. Staff across CJ’s frequently comment on the kindness, hard work, and positive influence of our B2 students, which is a credit to their growth and attitude. A huge congratulations to B2, keep up the amazing work!

    B3 Classroom

We've had an excellent Term 2 in B3, and it's been wonderful to see the whole class come together as a strong and supportive team. Our students have been working hard in Maths, especially on telling the time, learning about the months of the year, days of the week, and exploring the seasons.

In Literacy, everyone has shown noticeable improvement, and it's great to see the confidence growing in each student.  We've also been learning about relationships in Health, where students have engaged in meaningful discussions and activities.

A highlight of our week is always watching BTN (Behind the News) - the class looks forward to it and gets especially excited for the quiz at the end!

B3 is a fun and energetic class where learning is always an adventure. We're proud of how far we've come and are excited for what’s ahead on our learning journey!

B4 students have enjoyed a wonderful Term 2 enjoying lots of activities and learning experiences.

Students have focused on their Preliminary Units, Work Placements, Certificate Courses, Keys 4 Life, ASDAN, Rock and Water, Bike@bility, Bean@bility and Bush Rangers.  B4 Students have enjoyed their sports where their focus has been on football skills and teamwork.

Bush Rangers has been exciting with the news that we won the People’s Choice award for our Art Project Endangered Species- Western Swamp Tortoise and Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo.  Our School was presented with a Motion Camera, Ernest Hodgkins “Swanland Estuaries and Coastal Lagoons of Southwestern Australia” author Anne Brearley and Landscope Magazines.

Bush Ranger Cadets have participated in our Schools 'Clean Up Day' and Adopt A Spot 'Clean-Up' at Sandy Beach. Our recent Bush Ranger excursion to Kings Park proved to be rewarding and engaging for our students. Cadets participated in a “Fire Awareness Program” where students participated in activities learning how fires are managed in Kings Park.

    B6 Classroom

As it has been getting colder, the students of B6 have been working hard to achieve their goals throughout Term 2. Our students have continued to progress in the VET courses and Workplace Learning opportunities, developing their skills for further employment.

In class time, students have created budgets, learning financial literacy and management skills, as well as how to express their ideas through creative writing.

    Workplace Learning

This Semester has been a rewarding one, with several students reaching the important milestone of attending their work placements independently. This achievement shows not only their growth in confidence but also the development of strong work skills and self-management abilities which are key steps in preparing for life beyond school.

We were excited to welcome new workplace partnerships this Term with one being at WA Birds of Prey, where students are gaining unique, hands-on experience working with animals and learning about wildlife care and conservation. Also a number of students commenced their very first work placements, stepping into new environments and enjoying the opportunity to explore career pathways aligned with their certificate courses and personal interests.

    Support@bility

In Term 2, we had the pleasure of having Karen Reid from Valued Lives along with Daniel and Jeff from My Supported Living in for our morning info session.

Karen shared valuable information about the planning tools and pathways available to assist young people as they transition to independent living. Her presentation offered practical advice, backed by real-world experience.

Daniel and Jeff spoke about their personal drive to build meaningful relationships with young people and their commitment to supporting individual needs within the community.

While it was a small gathering, the session had lots of information and inspiration. We are grateful to our guest speakers for their time and enthusiasm, and we look forward to continuing these important conversations about the future pathways for our students.

    AFL Football Carnival

On one of the wettest days of the year, students took to the field at the Kalability AFL carnival at Kostera Oval.  Even though it was cold and windy, our students showed grit, determination and sportsmanship to excel on and off the field.  While we did not end up with the ultimate success, it was a fitting send off to our year 13’s, as it is their last opportunity to represent the school in AFL.

Hands-On Learning in Action: Certificate I in Agriculture at Kiara College

Kiara College has welcomed a group of external students participating in the Certificate I in Agriculture program — and what an incredible experience it has been!

The students have immersed themselves in authentic, hands-on learning, taking part in a range of routine farm tasks that support our working farm.  From feeding livestock and cleaning pens to maintaining water systems and monitoring animal health, every Wednesday offers a new opportunity to build skills that are essential to successful working in the agricultural industry.

Under the guidance of our dedicated Agricultural Training Officers and individual schools Educational Assistants, students have also gained valuable experience using machinery and farm equipment safely and efficiently. Whether it’s driving the Kubota, weighing sheep or maintaining their raised garden beds, the students are gaining real-world insight into the demands and rewards of farm life.

One of the program highlights has been the Paddock to Plate activity, where students have explored the journey of food from the farm to the table. This task involved utilising the zucchinis grown in the garden to prepare a simple, nutritious dish in the Home Economics kitchen. Students harvested the produce, cleaned and processed it, then followed a recipe to create a zucchini centred dish.

The enthusiasm, teamwork, and growing confidence of the students has been truly inspiring. It's fantastic to see young people from different schools come together, developing practical skills, a strong work ethic, and an understanding of agriculture.

    Art

The wonderful CJSC Ed Support Art students have been learning about Spanish Artist Pablo Picasso and his use of bold, abstract portraits.  Students have transferred their designs onto canvas using carbon paper. They then chose a selection of vibrant colours to paint their Picasso inspired abstract faces-focusing on pattern and shape.

Bold, black outlines have bought the work to life. Students enjoyed the process as well as learning about the Elements and Principles that make up a successful artwork.  It was a joy to work with these students!

    Home Ec 2

Every Thursday during Periods 3 and 4, the B3 classroom becomes our cooking space for Home Economics. It’s a fun and practical class where we learn how to prepare food, use kitchen tools safely, and work together as a team.

At the beginning of each lesson, we sit down and talk about the recipe we’ll be making. We discuss what ingredients we need, which utensils we’ll use, and what safety steps we need to follow in the kitchen. Before we start cooking, we practise measuring out the ingredients carefully – an important skill when following recipes.

Once we’re ready, it’s time to start cooking! Everyone gets involved in preparing & cooking the food. After cooking, we all help with washing up and cleaning our work areas.  The best part of the lesson is when we sit down together to enjoy the meal we’ve made.  It’s a great way to finish the class and appreciate what we’ve learned.

    ASDAN Practical Workshop

The Bike@bility program started 2025 with students from CJSC ESC, Swan View and Aveley enrolled in the program. This is a great opportunity for our students to develop teamwork skills and share experiences between the different schools.

Our students have been working through their ASDAN Practical Workshop skills on how to repair bikes. So far they have covered aspects such as safety in the workshop, planning to repair a bike, tools, wheels and tyres, brakes and chains.

The Bike@bility team also successfully prepared a bike for our Harmony Day Bike Raffle, which was fun and also very rewarding.   Well done team!

    Permaculture Skillset

Term 2 has been a productive and engaging time for students in Permaculture.  Students have prepared garden beds by weeding and enriching the soil with compost and a concentrated nutrient mix.  A variety of seedlings were planted, giving students hands-on experience with sustainable gardening.  Potato seeds are now in two of the garden beds.

Each week, students spend time in the garden, contributing food scraps to the compost and the worm farm. These ongoing activities have fostered teamwork, responsibility, and a deeper understanding of sustainable gardening practices.

    ANZAC Day

On Wednesday 30 April, Cyril Jackson SC ESC hosted an ANZAC Day ceremony that was attended by staff and students and our local RSL members David Beecham and George Dickenson.

Students created commemorative wreaths that were placed under the flagpoles during the ceremony and then later brought to the Bassendean War Memorial.  Thank you to everyone involved in the day's service.

    Swimming Lessons

During week 3, students had the opportunity to attend 4 days of swimming lessons at Swan Active Beechboro, learning more about swimming technique, water safety and rescues.

It was a pleasure to see our students’ confidence grow in the water, as the lessons were all capped off with fun activities as a group in the pool.

A huge thank you to all the staff at Swan Active for making this such a memorable experience for our students!
